In colonial times, young children went to Dame School. They went to school in the teachers' houses. Kids went to Dame School only until they could read everything that was on their hornbook. The children learned letters (ABC's), numbers and prayers. The Dame did housework while she taught children. I'm glad I don't go to Dame School because if children were bad, the teachers would whip them and call them stupid.
