Meet our Authors
The student authors are all members of an after-school club taught by Mrs. Purcell at Mary Hogan School in Middlebury, Vermont.  They each chose an early American psyeudonym (pen name) for our colonial schools website project.

Sophie writes:  I would not like to go to school in colonial times because I would only get to go to school for two years at Dame School.  Then I would have to stay home because girls did not go to school very long in the colonial times.

Miles says:  I want to go to the schools we have today.  Schools are bigger now and have more students.  Also we have desks and chairs.  We have better books too.

Matthew writes:  I would rather go to school now than in colonial times.  Back then, the teachers were very strict and punishment was harsh.  I think it is more fun in school today because we have a lot more games and have specials like art, PE, music and library.  I would like to go to college someday.  That would not have been possible in colonial times because it was too expensive.  It has been fun learning about colonial schools, but I'm glad I go to school today.

Charles thinks:  I would not like to go to school in colonial times because the punishement was harsh and  because there were no playgrounds.

Rebecca writes:  I would not like to go to school in colonial times because I would get in trouble.  If I did get in trouble, I would not want to go get a branch for the teacer to whip me.  I like school now because if I do something wrong, I only have to stay in for recess or have my parents get called.

Elizabeth thinks:  I would like to try colonial schools for a day or two, but it is fun here at Mary Hogan.   In colonial schools you get punished harshly.  You had to wear a dunce cap if you didn't know your lessons.

Emma writes:   I would like to go to a colonial school for one day because I would like to see what it was like.  But I would rather go to school today because there are nice teachers here.

Patrick's opinion:  I would not want to go to colonial schools because you would get whipped if you did something wrong.  Also you did not have recess like we do.

Adam writes:  I would not want to go to school incolonial days because they got punished harshly.

Ira thinks:  I would not want to go to colonial schools becasue you would get whipped if you did something wrong.  Also there were no playgrounds like we have now.
